Upload to Flickr Via Email

By Kevin | Jun 30, 2008

I’m actually writing this post while I’m on a mini-vacation (Read: Sanity Break). I got to thinking about different ways to update pictures from my blackberry and share them on the web. Being new to Flickr and never really using it before I wasn’t sure if there was a way to upload a picture from your phone via email.

After just a few minutes of poking around I was able to find a way to email a picture as an attachment directly to a specially generated email address from Flickr and have it added to your photo stream. The process is fairly simple, but I thought I’d highlight the process for you and share it for those unsure how.

Get A Yahoo ID For Flickr:
If you already have a Yahoo ID you can skip this section, if not read on.

-> Step 1: Navigate your browser to the Flickr homepage or just click on this link.
-> Step 2: In the upper right portion of the screen will be a button link with pink writing that says “Create Your Account”.
-> Step 3: In the Yahoo sign in box on the right side of the screen there is a link at the bottom to “Sign Up”. Click this link to create a yahoo account.
-> Step 4: Enter your information into the boxes and accept the Yahoo Terms of Service then click the “Create My Account” button at the bottom of the page.
-> Step 5: After you sign up it will give you the opportunity to log in. Put your user id and password into the boxes and sign in.

Now that you have a Yahoo ID, you can log into your Flickr account. Once you’ve logged in for your first time you’ll be brought to your empty homepage. You’ll notice at the top of the page is a small piece of text that states “Signed in as username“. Click on the the username to open your account management page. To set up your account for email uploading do the following:

-> Step 1: Once you’re at your account management page, click on the “Email” tab.
-> Step 2: You’ll see an item titled Your blog upload email and a link next to it to create an email address.
-> Step 3: You’ll see the automatically created email address in the upper right of the screen. Use this with your phone as the email address you send the picture to.

You can use the subject line of the email to give the picture a title and the body to add a description. This is going to come in really handy while I’m on my vacation or if I’m out and about and don’t happen to have my digital camera.
